Air Force ROTC Scholarships

Air Force ROTC offers many college students the opportunity to receive a traditional college education under either full or partial government scholarship, in exchange for future military service. Scholarships are available to many of the nation’s most prestigious colleges and universities to students studying in a variety of academic programs.

Scholarships for High School Students

If you are currently in high school, you may apply for a scholarship online. The Air Force scholarships currently available to high school seniors are:

  • Type 1 Scholarships - These four-year scholarships pay full tuition along with most fees and a $750 annual book allowance. They are very limited (approximately 5% of scholarship awardees receive a Type 2 scholarship) and are usually awarded to students studying engineering, chemistry or meteorology.

  • Type 2 Scholarships - These three-year or four-year scholarships pay up to $15,000 annually in tuition and fees along with a $750 annual book allowance. As with Type 1 scholarships, they are usually awarded to students studying engineering, chemistry or meteorology.

  • Type 7 Scholarships - These scholarships pay full tuition and fees along with a $750 book allowance, with the condition that the student attend a college or university with tuition under $9,000/year or attend a state school where the student qualifies for an in-state tuition rate.

Scholarships for College Students

If you are already in college, you may apply for the Air Force In College Scholarship Program (ICSP), if you meet the following criteria:

  • Be a U.S. citizen by your projected graduation date

  • Pass the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test

  • Meet Air Force Weight Standards

  • Pass the Air Force Physical Fitness Test (PFT)

  • Have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA

  • Pass a physical examination

Students who meet these criteria and are selected for a scholarship may be awarded one of three types of scholarship:
  • Type 2 Scholarships - These two-year or three-year scholarships pay up to $15,000 annually in tuition and fees along with a $750 annual book allowance. As with Type 1 scholarships, they are usually awarded to students studying engineering, chemistry or meteorology.

  • Type 3 Scholarships - These two-year or three-year scholarships pay full tuition (up to $9,000/year) and fees along with a $750 book allowance.

  • Type 3 Scholarships - These two-year or three-year scholarships pay tuition (up to $3,000/year) and fees along with a $750 book allowance.

These scholarship programs are a great way for college students to defray the cost of tuition and serve their country at the same time. Students who accept a scholarship are generally required to serve the Air Force for a total of 8 years after graduation with 4 years on active duty and 4 years in the inactive (no time commitment) reserves.
