Air Force Enlistment Requirements
Are you thinking about enlisting in the United States Air Force? Before you visit a military recruiter, you may wish to verify that you meet the basic enlistment requirements to avoid a disappointing outcome.
Before you enlist, you should read the Know Before You Go Guide to Enlistment from Military.com
Here’s an overview of the current requirements:
- Age requirement. Currently, the Air Force will allow you to enlist in the active duty force if you are between the ages of 17-27. If you are 17, you must have written parental consent. If you hope to enlist in the Air Force reserve, you may be up to 34 years old. If you have prior military service, you may be eligible for a waiver of this requirement.
- Exam requirement. You must take and pass the Armed Forces Qualifying Test. Each service has different standards for passing the exam.
- Medical Eligibility. You must be able to pass a military physical and be medically qualified for worldwide service. You also must meet Air Force height and weight standards.
- Drug History. You will be asked to answer the following questions in writing before you enlist:
- Have you ever used or experimented with marijuana?
- Have you ever experimented with, used or possessed any illegal drug or narcotic?
- Have you ever been a supplier or distributor of or a trafficker in marijuana, or other illegal drugs or narcotics?
- Have you ever been treated or undergone rehabilitation for drug or alcohol abuse?
- Have you consumed hemp seed oil or any products containing hemp seed oil in the last 45 days?
Marijuana use alone is not necessarily disqualifying, depending upon the number of uses. You will be required to take a drug test before enlisting. - Moral History. Convictions for any of the following offenses will make you ineligible for military service:
- Aggravated assault
- Bribery
- Burglary
- Carnal knowledge of, or indecent acts with, a child under 16
- Draft evasion
- Extortion
- Kidnapping, abduction
- Manslaughter or Murder
- Perjury
- Rape
- Robbery
Exceptions may be made in some cases where the crime was not committed as an adult. Convictions for other crimes require a waiver. - Education. Generally speaking, you must be a high school graduate to enlist in the Air Force. Unlike other services, the Air Force usually accepts only individuals with a high school diploma or adult education diploma. They do accept an extremely small number of individuals with a GED or equivalent. Those individuals must have exceptionally high scores on the AFQT.
- Dependents. You may not have more than two dependents (including your spouse). Single parents are not eligible for enlistment. If you are married to a military member and have children, you are only eligible to enlist if you obtain a special waiver.
- Financial Qualifications. If you have any dependents, are 23 years of age or older, or have a bad credit history, you must successfully complete a financial qualifications check. Basically, the military looks at your debts and financial responsibilities and compares it to your future military income. If you won’t be able to meet your obligations on a military salary, you’re ineligible to enlist.
- Residency. You must be a permanent resident of the United States to enlist in the Air Force. You’ll be asked to prove this by providing either a green card or a permanent resident visa and proof that you’ve established a permanent home in the country. If you’re hoping to become a military officer, you must be a U.S. citizen.

As parents, could we obtain custody of our grandchild while she join the Air Force? If so, how long would the legal custody have to last before she could regain custody of her child?

Hey all, not sure if anyone’s checking the site but I can update a few of the questions…:
1) There is a tattoo policy, however most tattoos are not an issue as long as they are not in specific places (above the neckline, on the hands/feet). Of course there are exceptions, which I urge you to talk to a local recruiter about if you have any specific questions for them.
2) You cannot join ANY branch of the service with flat feet (with the possible exception of Coast Guard) but again it’s a case-by-case basis. At MEPS (military entrance processing) you are given a military physical by a doctor who will tell you of any and all abnormalities. Some won’t be disqualifying, others will.
…unfortunately I am unaware of the answers to the other posed questions, as I have only just gone through MEPS myself, so I’m only limited to what my recruiter tells me and what I know from first-hand experience.
Good Luck on getting answers for the questions, and hopefully someone found this comment useful.

Do you have to be able to swim to be in the air force?
February 10th, 2009 at 10:07 am
Regarding the 20 year girl who has a daughter and wants to join the AF. All that needs to be done is that a Power of Attorney be gotten for the rights to provide care giving to the child until the 20 year old completes her training and gets her first assignment. If her first assignment is overseas, then the Power of Attorney will need to be extended. If her assignmemt is in the States, then I don’t see why she couldn’t then bring the child to her first assignment location and raise her child.
Regarding the person with the swimming question, they never asked me if I could swim or not. But, there is a confidence course in basic training in which I had to climb across a long rope that was over a pond. If you don’t fall, you’ll be ok. If you do fall, you should be ok since there are a lot of people there to help you if you fall. With all that said, you should go ahead and learn how to swim.

February 19th, 2009 at 3:47 pm
If the above list of questions is an example of what the services have to pick from today, we are all in trouble in the future.
February 20th, 2009 at 12:00 am
Emilio, I am a Resident myself. You can enlist being a permanent resident. All you have to provide to your recruiter is your green card.
Don’t forget that a High School (or GED) diploma is needed. If you went to High School in another country, you will have to provide your transcript, as well as any documentation for any surgeries if you’ve had any. I was told that if you have some college, it helps the High School verification process.
You should talk to your local recruiter because there are other requirements, such as a credit check and a background check.
Good luck.

March 3rd, 2009 at 4:03 pm
I am 17 years old, and I have asthma. I was wondering if that would be a factor in wether or not I would be able to enlist in the United States Air Force.
Also, as a part of the military, I’m sure that they look at your schooling grades, what kinds of grades would they be looking for?
March 10th, 2009 at 8:55 pm
I was told by a recruiter today, that if I sign a contract tomorrow it would be four to six months before I would even leave to basic training, and at least two months before I would even know what job I would get!~ Does this sound normal to anyone else. Is this just an extreme case with my particular recruiter or is this how long it takes everywhere in the country? I really wanted to join and leave when this quarter of college gets out and not have to sit around for months on end not knowing if I should have signed up for another quarter of college or not.
March 11th, 2009 at 1:19 am
You can’t join the Air Force with asthma, period. If it was in the past and you are symptom-free today, you may possibly be able to get a waiver from another service IF you go take a very expensive medical test to prove your lungs are well. I went through this about three years ago.
April 5th, 2009 at 1:02 pm
When I was 18 I enlisted in the Air Force and compleated my MEPS testing, but the day I was to leave for basic traning I got scared and decided not to go. I am now 27 and would like to enlist do you know if my previous experience would keep me from being able to enlist?

Not sure where you’re from, but it’s the same here in WI. My recruiter said he was going to see if he can move me up on the list since I’m not working and can leave right away with not problems or obligations. But we’ll see how that works out.

Hello,
I am currently a freshman in high school but have been thinking about joining the Air Force since I was younger. I was wondering what are some of the physical and educational requirements. I want to know what courses I will eventually have to take and what fitness I should be in by the time I graduate. (I am female by the way)
And also do you have to have perfect eyesight to join? If not, what are the limitations?
Thank you -
May 19th, 2009 at 4:39 pm
I have been contemplating on joining the Air Force fresh out of college for a long time because I want to become a new officer. Back in December 2007, I was told by a recruiter that you are disqualified for enlistment if you are taking any medications used to treat depression. The recruiter, however told me that I am allowed to enlist if I have weened myself off the medication healthily and remain off with no more symptoms of depression for a year. I hope to ween myself off under my doctor’s advice successfully this time by the time I graduate from college. The only thing I want to avoid is fraudalent enlistment. I want to do honest enlestment.
May 28th, 2009 at 12:11 pm
As a former USAF member, I would like to clarify a few points based on my own personal experience.
1. Flat feet…at MEPS or your commissioning physical, upon determination that you have flat feet, you will be asked if they have ever bothered you. If you say no, you are not disqualified.
2. Asthma…no branch of the military will accept you with Asthma, however; you can have asthma as a youth classified as childhood asthma which is not disqualifying.
I attended MEPS when I was considering enlisting in the Marines and had two AF pre-commissioning physicals. The thing to remember is to be honest and disclose any relevant info…from there they will work with you. By the way, I had no waivers.

I am trying to join the Air Force as an officer, but I have some collection accounts on my credit and my rating is horrible. I have a masters and student loans too. I signed up for debt payment plan last year and they are doing nothing. I have another counseling session with a non-profit to help me get things in order. Can this bar me from getting in?
July 9th, 2009 at 5:04 am
killar, as long as what you make from the military is enough to cover your debt then they will let you in. and if you have a bachelor’s degree for officer.
LC,
that is good considering that the economy is not stable but as a mother or father remember that an officer wanting to progress in his career can and will deploy overseas. Normally its 5-6 years of the first enlistment because of the amount of schooling that they have to go through.
July 17th, 2009 at 11:27 pm
@G
I’m not sure if the Air Force has this program, but it may be possible for you to ask your recruiter to have you on stand by. From what I understand, if someone who is scheduled to go to BMT drops out, you can take his place. The down side is that you don’t know when and if that’ll happen and you’ll have to take his MOS.
@LC
Your son will be contracted for the next 4-6 years, not including the 12-18 months it takes to get pass the application process for OTS. By the time he’s finishes his package for OTS the economy may be good enough for him to get a job. Make sure he doesn’t mind being in the military, it isn’t a typical job.

hello i am a 19 year old male with 2 disqualifying factors. weight and a dependent. i have been consistantly losing weight so that is not the problem. my problem is i have a 6 month old boy with my former fiance and we have a custody agreement outside of court. if i give up custody of my child to join would it have to be permanent or could it be temporary while i was in basic training. i pay child support but not through the courts. i need help on this matter simply because i do not want to give up custody forever just simply make sure my child is taken care of while i am unable to support him. he does not live with me currently and will not but i do have visitation with him. please help!

My son was in a 4-wheeler accident when he was in the 9th grade; he had his spleen removed. He has never had complications after the surgery. He is now 20 and very healthy. Will this disqualify him for the military?
September 23rd, 2009 at 7:12 pm
how long does a custody papers have to b in effect before a person can join
September 27th, 2009 at 6:50 pm
My uncle who was and i believe still is in the Air Force said that you will have to have a certain score on your ACT. Is this true and if so what is it?
October 1st, 2009 at 10:40 pm
umm if your kind of color blind only a little could you be in the air force?
October 5th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
okay, i’ll answer a few of these questions…
you only need permission from one parent to join
i know there are jobs you cannot do if you have done LSD, been hyponitized, or have chonic headaches, or have ever had a seizure because you could lapse into an episode, i’m sure pilot is one of them
i think you will need a greencard before you go…
College GPA doesnt matter w/ joining, but you could come in w/ more rank if you have college credit
not sure about the felony as a minor. army is more leinant than the air force. def not able to join w/ a felony as an adult but you’ll have to speak to a recruitor
your son could probably join w/out a spleen especially since he hasnt had any problems
for all those w/ custody questions, you only have to give up custody while you are in basic and tech school training, but i dont know how long they have to be in effect.
no certain score on the ACT for enlisted. there are requirements for the SAT for commissioning programs. you only have to meet the requirements for your job on the ASVAP, which is like the ACTs
there are plenty of jobs in the air force that you can do if your colorblind, but you are disqualified from some

What are the eye-sight requirements?
December 23rd, 2009 at 1:54 pm
@Ben: I am almost 100% certain you can not join any branch with Chron’s Disease.
Let me answer a couple of general questions regarding enlistment (speak to an officer acessions recruiter for officer requirements as they are different):
1) GPA is not required to be at a certain level. Same with ACT/SAT. ASVAB scores are what is used for aptitude into career fields. For officer candidates this will be different; you will have to meet with an officer recruiter to determine if you meet the qualifications for OTS and your career field.
2) Health Issues: Some health issues may be waiverable, some may not be. You will have to gather all your medical records for the issue and the Air Force will make a determination. Asthma is one commonly known to bar entry but as one poster mentioned if you make a very very good case you may be let in. Since medical issues are a case-by-case basis there is no way to answer it in this forum.
3) Non-US Citizen Enlistment: Certain non-citizens can apply. I believe, however, they may not re-enlist until they become a US citzen. See your recruiter for more information.
4) For those convicted of crimes it is difficult to join the Air Force. A “moral waiver” is generally issued when the applicant can prove past behavior is not indicative of future performance — which is tough. More waivers are accepted during high need, which in these economic times is not much. I would suggest Army enlistment for these applicants.

I am an Air Force Recruiter in Fresno, CA. Everyone is unique and should consult their local Air Force Recruiter for answers to your specific circumstances or go to AIRFORCE.COM for a pre-screening with a “Live Chat” Recruiter.
WEIGHT AND PHYSICAL FITNESS: Your weight is fixable! Work out and eat right until you are about 10lbs below your max weight limit. The Recruiter only wants to ensure your success in Basic Military Training (BMT). Physical Fitness is a HOT TOPIC for the Air Force right now. They want smart and physically fit individuals. You MUST be able to run in a certain allotted time for your gender and age or you will be sent permanently HOME that next Monday. Nobody wants that… Prepare your body and mind for 1.5 mile runs 6 days per week!
TATTOO: This is another HOT TOPIC with the Air Force. Racist, gang related, large (over 1/4 of body part), and sexual tattoos will not be tolerated. Please do not get tattoos on your right hand or forearm because it is the one you will salute the American flag with. Don’t get one that can be seen in uniform to include Physical Training uniform or your Blues. They will check your body at the Military Entrance Processing (MEPS) and at Basic Military Training (BMT). Your recruiter is not permitted to view your tattoos, but you must disclose verbally what they are.
PARENTAL CONSENT: You will need permission from both parents to join, unless one parent can sign an affidavit stating that the other parent is nowhere to be found.
DEPENDENCY: Single individuals who wish to Enlist as Active Duty with a child must sign custody to someone else and cannot obtain custody of that child until the end of their first enlistment. So, if that individual signs on for a 4 year contract, they cannot obtain custody until that 4 years is up.
EDUCATION/ASVAB: Graduate and score well on your ASVAB test, High School students. The Air Force is not concerned about your GPA. The ASVAB determines what your have the aptitude/potential to learn a skill. The higher your scores, the more job opportunities will be opened to you. I suggest a good 8 hour rest, a candy bar, and an energy drink before your take that ASVAB. HIGH SCORE=MORE OPPORTUNITIES
Again, everyone is unique and should consult their local Air Force Recruiter for answers to your specific circumstances or go to AIRFORCE.COM for a pre-screening with a “Live Chat” Recruiter.

I have a GED and I want to enlist in the air force. How high of a score should I score to be considered exceptional for the less than 1% of enlistees? Think a 90 would suffice?

I lost my right eye during a ping pong tournment @ my local YMCA . I was wondering if that would disqualify me from joining the blue angels or flying a F-16 bcuz that is one of my childhood dreams.

I graduated high school from an “accredited” home school and received a high school diploma. I tried to join the Air Force through one of the local recruiters but it took them 7 months to tell me that I might have to get 15 college credits in order to join bc that is georgia’s requirements for home schooled enlistees… is this true or should i go visit a different recruiter?? email me back at jfulbright86@yahoo.com as soon as possible. thanks!!
